Davis Cup: "A dream came true for us"

Croatia celebrates its second Davis Cup title.

After Marin Cilic turned the match ball, there was no stopping the Croatian team. They all rushed to the square and the man who had contributed significantly to winning the Davis Cup with two points. For Croatia it is after 2005 only the second title in the prestigious country comparison. An absolutely deserved title, the Croats had played all weekend especially in singles the French clearly from the record. It was also a wistful evening for many. It was the last Davis Cup in the old format. Something that mainly occupied the French players after the final.

Revenge for the final of the football World Cup

The Croatian players were of course (and absolutely deserved) primarily engaged in celebrations. If the title is also a small revenge for the final of the World Cup this year. France had the edge. Well, then Croatia, who enjoyed their victory extensively. "You do not become world champion every day," said Marin Cilic after his match against Lucas Pouille. "It has become a dream for us, for our nation, we are very passionate, you can see it with the fans, you have fun and I think it's a great thing in Croatia, too". It was true, as far as the mood was concerned, it was not necessary to hide this Davis Cup final. Both the French home fans and the traveling Croats provided a breathtaking backdrop.

Last Davis Cup in the old format

A backdrop that will not happen again next year. After all, the ITF decided this year to fundamentally reform the national tournament. The heart of the change is a tournament at the end of the year, which will now decide who can call itself Davis Cup winner. Gone are the consistent home and away games, which are now used only for the qualifying rounds. So it's over for a backdrop like today. A decision that caused quite a controversy and made sure that, in addition to the French fans, many others were in a wistful mood.

Wistful were the French players. Not only because of the lost final but also because of the reform. Have you decided against this conversion of the Davis Cup? Lucas Pouille reiterated that due to the reform Davis Cup will not play anymore. Pierre-Hugues Herbert also showed his antipathy to the new format clearly: "I hope it does not work and the ITF revises the decision again."

Fair losers

But despite all the criticism of the changes next year, the French did not want to be one thing: bad losers. The French tennis federation FFT posted a congratulation to the Croats shortly after the defeat on Twitter: "Bravo to the team from Croatia, who wins the Davis Cup 2018 and thanks to the Blues" it said. In addition, the entire French team came to the cabin of the Croats and congratulated the winners warmly.

It seemed as though they did not want to tarnish the joy of their victory with thoughts of 2019. Because the now reigning winners will eventually have to deal with the changes. Not today. Today, only one thing counts for the Croats to enjoy the victory. You deserve it.
