The duel between Magda Linette and Jelena Ostapenko looked pretty normal at first glance. A 6: 4, 6: 3 for the world number 25. against number 43 in the world at the WTA tournament in Rome. But one value brought a really strange number.
In all of her ten service games, the Latvian managed to serve a whopping 15 (!) Double faults. Seven in the first round, eight of them in the second set. Not for the first time that Ostapenko could come up with a crude double-fault statistic. At the US Open 2019, she served seven (!) Double faults in a service game, in Beijing she even won against Karolina Pliskova despite 24 of these serve faux pas.
Ostapenko was the 2017 French Open winner
All the more astonishing that the 23-year-old can at least call herself a Grand Slam winner. And on the same surface as was played in Rome, because Ostapenko triumphed at the French Open in 2017.
Since then, the Latvian’s career has been in waves. It is currently number 43 in the world - but with a downward trend. Also because of the ludicrous double error rate.
